For a long time, music has been a part of who I am, but it wasn't until recently that I felt truly connected to the process of making music again. Earlier this year, I found myself drawn back into the world of composition and production, this time with a new direction. Minimalist, neo-classical, and ambient music became my guide, helping me rediscover not just the joy of creating sound, but also the emotional and mental clarity it can bring.
A New Beginning
It all started earlier this year when I began diving deeply into minimalist and ambient soundscapes. Artists like Jóhann Jóhannsson, Ólafur Arnalds, and Philip Glass became my everyday companions, inspiring me to explore simplicity in music. Unlike before, this time I wasn’t trying to craft something overly complex or heavily produced. Instead, I was stripping things down, creating space between the notes, and finding beauty in the stillness.
At the same time, my love for cinematic music resurfaced. Composers like Ennio Morricone and John Carpenter had always been favorites, but now I was listening to their work with a different perspective—one that embraced a more melancholic and introspective mood.
What Music Gives Me
The act of making music gives me a sense of purpose and clarity that’s hard to describe. It’s not just about putting together melodies or harmonies; it’s about creating a space where emotions can be explored without boundaries. When I sit down at the piano or start layering ambient textures, I’m not just composing a track—I’m building a refuge, a place where I can reflect, think, and simply be.
Music offers a unique way to process emotions, thoughts, and experiences. For me, it acts as a form of meditation. With each note, I find myself peeling away the layers of life’s complexities, gaining a deeper understanding of myself and the world around me. There’s something profoundly calming about focusing solely on the sound—letting the melody carry you, without distraction.
Creating Connection
As much as making music is a personal process, it's also a way to connect. It allows me to share a piece of myself with others in a way that words can’t. With my new work, I hope that listeners can find their own sense of peace, reflection, or even healing. Music, at its core, is a conversation—between the composer, the performer, and the listener. Through my music, I want to invite people into that conversation, offering a space to pause and reflect, to think and feel.
Starting this journey again has been one of the most fulfilling things I’ve done in recent years. Music has always been there, but now it feels like it's giving me something new—an opportunity to slow down, reconnect, and find clarity in both the sound and the sil
ence between the notes.
As I continue down this path, I’m excited to share more of the music I’ve been working on. My hope is that it resonates with you in some small way and becomes part of your own reflection and journey.
Stay tuned for my upcoming single, "This Too Shall Pass," and thank you for being a part of this journey with me. Photo: Mika Toivanen
