"All the Best" is a piano piece about a friend I lost – it's a calm farewell, where melancholy and acceptance walk hand in hand. I lost my friend in October 2011, thirteen years ago around this time. I often see him in unexpected places, especially in our water dog, Valo. It's as if Valo’s presence mirrors the essence of who my friend was.
My friend often wrote me messages that ended with, “All the best, young man.” That phrase became special to me, so much so that I even created a podcast series named after it.
What does it mean to you to let go of someone important? What thoughts or emotions does it bring up? Letting go is one of life’s inevitable parts. As Kahlil Gibran wrote, “Love knows not its own depth until the hour of separation,” and Aristotle once reflected that “Friends are a single soul dwelling in two bodies.” These reflections also capture my relationship with this piece – it's like a conversation with my friend, who is no longer with me.
Have you had a similar experience? All the best, Markus
